Client Successes

Casting defects eliminated, saving a billion-dollar casting project

Switching to ACCUCAST ceramic casting media from olivine sand achieved necessary dimensional tolerances for aluminum marine foundry project.

Production rate increase avoids capital investment for a new line addition

A captive aluminum operation using silica sand in the lost foam process was faced with a need to increase production to meet engine block production requirements. With multiple production lines already operating, they were faed with a significant potential capital investment to add yet another line.

Cleaning cost reduced while achieving high casting precision

A gray and ductile iron job shop using olivine sand in the lost foam process was experiencing high burn-on of media to the castings. In addition, veining defect and distortion of casting roundness occurred, resulting in longer cleaning times and higher production costs. Their goal was to cast cleaner and more dimensionally precise parts.

REDUCTION IN MEDIA USE AND METAL PENETRATION SIGNIFICANTLY LOWERS OPERATIONAL COST

A gray and nodular iron jobbing shop using silica sand in the lost foam process was experiencing high casting defects of penetration veining resulting in high cleaning and scrap costs. The goal was to improve casting quality while lowering operational costs.

CAST MEDIA COSTS REDUCED BY 55% PER CUBIC FOOT AND CLEANING TIME LOWERED BY 75%

A producer of large cast steel parts (3,500-50,000 lb) for the mining, construction, marine, rail, turbine valves and industrial markets needed to reduce escalating media cost without affecting production quality. For specialty application requiring high-quality metal finishing, zircon sand was used due to its high refractory value and low thermal expansion that enhanced both dimensional reproducibility and shakeout.
